Abhuman Auxilia
(Basic) Abhuman Auxilia Beastman Pack Warrior |
|||||||||
Beastmen have little to offer the Imperial military. They have little proficiency with ranged weapons and no grasp of tactics or military organisation. However, they are incredibly obedient and prefer close quarters fighting to combat at a distance. To this end, the Imperial Guard and some Planetary Defence Forces recruit beastmen into abhuman auxilia companies, where they act as shock troops, and occasionally as dispensable cannon fodder for wave attacks. Casualty rates are often as high as 90%, but desertion rates are virtually negligible. |

Although human officers normally command beastman auxilia companies (usually as a punishment detail), the strongest beastmen tend to assert squad-level control as alpha males. This is a trait encouraged by their human commanders, since competition amongst potential challengers to the pack chieftains position ensures that the squads act to their full potential on the battlefield, although company commanders occasionally have to intercede when challengers resort to violence against one another. |

(Basic) Abhuman Auxilia Ogryn Soldja |

Ogryns love to kill things. Ogryns are incredibly obedient. These two facts were brought together thousands of years ago by the Imperial Guard, who have long fielded them in assault squads attached to human infantry companies, a practice closely followed by many Planetary Defence Forces, and the Imperial Navy. Although most human units will complain at having to fight alongside abhumans, the reliability of ogryns to smash the enemy whenever asked to do so means that troopers will more often than not accept them as near-equals. |

Through a system of natural selection, the toughest and most brutal ogryns will survive long enough to gain rudimentary leadership abilities ("Dem ones are nasty, shoot em before you it em, boys"). In order to ensure the obedience of the other ogryns, these experienced ogryns are assigned the brevet (i.e. honorary) rank of sergeant, and possibly some shiny buttons and a prominent rank badge. |

(Basic) Abhuman Auxilia Ratling Woodsman |
|||||||||
Coming from relatively primitive homeworlds, many ratlings have an innate affinity with the wild places, and so make superb scouts and marksmen when they enter the military. This is fortunate, since theyre poor fighters, inclined to petty crime and will consume almost twice as much food as a human soldier if it werent for their strengths, few commanders would have them in their armies. |

Among the normally sociable ratlings of abhuman auxilia companies, there are those who are insular and uncommunicative. Perhaps as a result of this, they tend to fixate on their scouting roles to the extent that they far outclass their human colleagues (not that the humans would ever admit to this). The Imperial Guard, in particular, favours the use of ratlings as snipers. |
