(Basic) Adepta Sororitas – Battle Sister

After the near-collapse of the Imperium in the Age of Apostasy, the High Lords of Terra forbade the Ecclesiarchy from having any ‘men under arms’, meaning that the Frateris Templar was disbanded. The loophole in the wording allowed the Ecclesiarchy to use the heretic Lord Vandire’s Brides of the Emperor as their military fighting force. Renamed as the Adepta Sororitas, the battle sisters have not only protected Ecclesiarchal interests across the galaxy, but also kept an eye on the priesthood themselves, staying alert for signs of heresy or corruption.

Celestians are the elite of the Adepta Sororitas. Although they occasionally fight in a manner comparable to special forces in more conventional Imperial military units, their more common battlefield roles are guarding their order’s canoness or offering fire support to their sisters. Most celestians are dedicated students of religion, and spend their time studying the Imperial scriptures, typically the more apocalyptic sections favoured by such Imperial sects as the Redemptionists. As such, they despise all mutants, witches, aliens and deviants with an even greater fervour (if that were possible) than the common brethren.

More than just a squad leader, the sisters superior are effectively priestesses of the Imperial Cult (not that such things officially exist within the male-dominated Ministorum). Most preachers will not dare refuse the insistence of an Adept Sororitas to step into the pulpit and deliver a sermon, and so it is that sisters superior can often be seen evangelising to the masses. They also lead prayer sessions for their squad members and receive confession on the night before battle.

By the time an Adept Sororitas has walked the long road to becoming the canoness of her order, she is of advanced years, has seen countless sisters die on forgotten battlefields, often for reasons unconnected to religion, and is tired of killing for the Ministorum’s political games. She will have witnessed the earthly machinations of the cardinals and confessors she has been assigned to watch over, and may have become jaded with regard to the ability of man (or maybe just men in particular) to know the will of the Emperor. Nevertheless, canonesses rarely lose their faith because of this. Instead they channel their disillusionment into understanding the true nature of the Emperor’s saints and heroes, looking past the pomp and bombast of the Ecclesiarchy, and finding out who the real men and women were, and how such (usually) humbly-born individuals could achieve things that the greatest cardinals could not. Although they will never be able to change the ways of the Ministorum itself, canonesses often become highly respected theologians, and the works of some of these women are measured amongst the greatest literary treatises the Imperium has to offer.
