Intelligence Agent
There are well over a million intelligence organisations in the Imperium. Every planet has its own government security agency, even if this is merely a half dozen spies amongst the workers of an agri-world, or an intelligence wing of the police or Planetary Defence Force. Beyond that, the Imperial Guard, Navy, Ministorum and the Adeptus Arbites all have covert divisions, as, of course, has the Inquisition. Many noble houses and corporations also maintain networks for industrial espionage on various levels, often extending as far as assassination of dangerous rivals, using specially trained agents known as ‘cleaners’, even though such activities are usually illegal and often treated extremely seriously by planetary authorities.
It is not unknown for different intelligence agencies, even Imperial ones, to succumb to inter-agency rivalry and launch clandestine wars of assassinations and bombing against one another. The Inquisition looks unkindly on spymasters who send their agents against one another, to the detriment of defending the Imperium.
(Basic) Intelligence Agent – Analyst |
|||||||||
The lowest rank in the intelligence services is the analyst. When in the field, analysts gather information, rather than engage in direct action against the agency’s targets. They observe every moment of a target’s life, via methods as simple as rummaging through bins up to tracking them in real-time via orbiting satellites. Back at base, other analysts sift through the data gathered by the field operatives, as well as by permanent surveillance devices and listening posts. They piece together various snippets that could have slipped past an individual field operative’s notice, to build an accurate model of what the agency’s targets are up to, whether they are aliens, heretics, dissidents or even other Imperial organisations. |

(Advanced) Intelligence Agent – Spook |
|||||||||
When undercover work is required, the ‘spooks’ are called in. The classic secret agent, these faceless men and women infiltrate targets, posing as fellow dissidents, underworld criminals, prostitutes or even heretics, in order to bring dangerous organisations and individuals down. Spooks will never be recognised for their work, and the only memorial to those who fall in the line of duty is a plaque in a discreet area of their headquarters. |

(Advanced) Intelligence Agent – Cleaner |
|||||||||
It is inevitable that, when exposed to the counter-culture of heresy and rebellion that poses the greatest threat to the Imperium’s stability, that some intelligence agents will begin to sympathise. This can lead to laxity of duty or even turning rogue. There is nothing an intelligence organisation fears more than one of its own agents turning against it, so a special breed of agent exists to deal with these threats as and when they occur. The ‘cleaners’ are cold, brutal, but efficient killers, taking no pleasure in their jobs, but showing no remorse. Because of the nature of their work, they trust no one, not even their superiors, and many fall prey to paranoia and become convinced that they too are at risk of being ‘cleaned’. Which is true. |

(Advanced) Intelligence Agent – Spymaster |
|||||||||
Sitting at the centre of a web of spies, the spymaster has the resources of an entire intelligence organisation at his command. He can order his enemies to be watched at all time, he can eliminate rivals with his cleaners, and he can plant evidence to bring down even the most pious citizen on charges of heresy. As such, intelligence organisations spend vast amounts of money ensuring that their spymasters are kept happy, and government or Imperial spymasters can often look forward to a respectable title on retirement. |
