Officio Assassinorum

The Imperium has access to the most powerful and widest-ranging military resources in existence, yet sometimes, none of this is appropriate for dealing with particular problems. Some alien warlords are too well-guarded, some rebellious governors too popular, some fortresses too indestructible, for mere military might to work.

This is when business is handed over to the Officio Assassinorum, one of the least well-kept of all the secret Imperial organisations, and deliberately so. Fear is their main weapon, and many a rebellious governor has been cowed into obedience by the mere threat of a visit from the Officio.

There are dozens of Temples (order of assassins), the four largest being Callidus, Culexus, Eversor and Vindicare.

(Basic) Officio Assassinorum – Novice

Officio assassins are far more than mere hired killers. They are trained from childhood, sometimes before they can even walk, to infiltrate, to use weapons, and to kill without pity, mercy or remorse. By the time of an assassin’s sixteenth birthday, the novice is far more capable of murder than the most experienced freelance hitman. Despite this, they are still not yet fully trained and need to learn the specific crafts of their Temple.

(Advanced) Officio Assassinorum – Callidus Adept

The Callidus Temple concentrates on stealth and infiltration. One of their most secret specialisations is to covertly assassinate and mimic targets. They do this by means of a drug called polymorphine, which allows the assassin to transform their shape into that of any other human. Abhumans, animals and aliens can also be imitated with the surgical implantation of certain modifications, activated by the polymorphine, that allow for the growth and control of extra arms, additional muscle growth, and so on.

(Advanced) Officio Assassinorum – Culexus Adept

Culexus assassins are truly horrifying. If the reputation of the Officio Assassinorum was not enough, all members of the Culexus Temple are pariahs, anti-psykers to a far greater degree than mere untouchables, with a negative warp signature that leaves all close to them with a feeling of utter revulsion and dread. They are utterly immune to psychic powers and actually absorb psychic energy used against them. Because of this, their targets are usually psykers. Their favourite method of assassinating such a target is to take hold of them and leech their souls from their body via a form of vampirism.

Culexus Adepts develop the Etherium mutation D6 months after entering the career, as a result of the meditation rituals that make up the Temple’s training, enhancing their pariah curse until even the non-psychic have difficulty registering their presence. Etherium means that characters will only be aware of a Culexus Assassin’s presence (even if standing directly in front of them) if they first pass an Initiative test. Failed tests can be retaken the following round, although once characters have seen the Assassin, they remain aware of him or her until the end of the immediate encounter. Even when characters are unable to perceive the Assassin, they will still suffer the effects of the Culexus’s warp-negative presence.

(Advanced) Officio Assassinorum – Eversor Adept

Whereas most of the individual Temples are not known by name, every Imperial politician or military commander knows of Eversor. Where other Temples preach a doctrine of silent kills with little or no collateral damage, Eversor throws that rulebook out of the window. Witnesses of Eversor attacks are few, but the assassins make sure to always leave one survivor, to tell others of the carnage they have been a part of. Fuelled by vast quantities of damaging combat drugs, many Eversor assassins do not live beyond their early twenties, and when they do die, their corrupted metabolism breaks down with explosive results. The Master of Assassins for the Eversor Temple is a haggard shell of a man, barely able to breathe without aid, thanks to the damaging effects of his last-resort Barrage injector, used repeatedly on his final field mission, where he single-handedly wiped out the upper echelons of the Grey Tigers Space Marine Chapter, as punishment for their use of Daemon weapons.

D6 months into the career, Eversor Adepts gain the Poison Blood – Bloodfire mutation.

The body of an Eversor is a nightmarish, drug-fuelled, perversion of nature that barely keeps itself in check at the best of times. If the Eversor Adept is killed (either during or after his time in this career), then his body will explode with the effects of a plasma grenade. Additionally, every character within D6 yards is splashed on D6 locations with bloodfire poison.

(Advanced) Officio Assassinorum – Vindicare Adept

Vindicare are snipers. They can lie undetected, unmoving, for weeks at a time, waiting for a target to appear. When they do, a single shot is all that is needed, their custom-built Exitus rifles firing exactly the right type of bullet for the job.

(Advanced) Officio Assassinorum – Master of Assassins

The highest-ranking assassins in each Temple are the Masters of Assassins. These men and women are experts at killing, possibly the most lethal individuals in the Imperium. They don’t normally go on missions, instead preferring to remain within the Temple, training novices in the Temple’s deadly arts. However, should the Temple be exposed to a difficult or prestigious target, Masters will often come out of their semi-retirement, even if just for the challenge.
