Officio Medicae
When the Imperial Guard goes into combat, they are at the head of a phenomenally complicated system of support personnel, armourers, intelligence gatherers, bureaucrats and camp followers. Among the most important of these is the Officio Medicae, either doctors who have gone through basic military training, or troopers trained to treat injuries.
These combat medics often fight alongside normal Imperial Guard troopers, treating casualties as and when they occur, but some drive ambulances (or converted armoured personnel carriers) to ferry wounded soldiers back to the hospitals behind the lines, where field surgeons deal with the more serious and life-threatening injuries.
Additionally, where there is a crisis, such as a planetary pandemic, where local medical resources are overwhelmed, the Officio Medicae will often be called in to provide additional support. This is particularly the case where the emergency is accompanied by civil unrest or war, as was the case in the Plague of Unbelief in 999.M41.
(Basic) Officio Medicae – Combat Medic |

Combat medics are little more than a soldier with basic medical training. Normally they serve as orderlies in field surgeries, or as ambulance drivers ferrying the wounded from the battlefield. Occasionally, they are assigned to accompany platoons of infantry, keeping the wounded fighting for as long as possible and preserving the lives of battlefield officers. |

(Advanced) Officio Medicae – Field Surgeon |
|||||||||
Field surgeons are normally spared the direct horror of the battlefield, but their valuable surgical skills expose them to the indirect – the tattered limbs, shattered bones and pulsing organs of the wounded. Unsurprisingly, many field surgeons take a dim view to violence, and some are devoutly pacifist. It can be a strain on a regimental commander when he has to persuade a commissar not to execute a much-needed surgeon for cowardice after he refuses to pick up the weapon he was issued with. |
