Mercenary
(Basic) Mercenary Trooper |
Despite the best efforts of the Imperial authorities to ensure that all bodies of fighting men work either directly for it or for one of its planetary governments, there are still many mercenary units willing to hire themselves to any employer (government, private or corporate) that wishes to hire them. Even Imperial organisations with no scruples or a more lax attitude towards the mercenary issue may hire freelance help when a situation demands it. Sometimes it is best for a faction to hire mercenaries pre-emptively, to ensure their opponents do not hire the same mercenaries, although this is not always a guarantee of safety, because some mercenary groups will switch sides if enough money is offered. Most though will adhere to a contract until it is completed, regardless of other, higher, offers. Although they are usually poorly equipped, mercenaries are generally tough and experienced fighters. |

(Advanced) Mercenary Squad Leader |
Mercenary units tend not to have rigid hierarchies, instead relying on personal merit and combat experience. As such, the leader of a mercenary squad, more often than not, bears the same rank as the men and women under his command. In combat, mercenary squad leaders tend to lead by force of personality, and the respect their deeds instill in their charges, rather than threats of punishment or any automatic expectation of obedience. Off the battlefield, this lack of formality can lead to poor discipline, and it is up to squad leaders to ensure that their troopers do not break company regulations, which often results in the entire squad being docked wages. |

(Advanced) Mercenary Captain |
The leader of a mercenary outfit, whether it is the size of a platoon or a regiment, is typically known as the captain, although he may insist on a grander title being used while he is around. Mercenary captains are generally experienced fighters who have worked their way up from the rank of trooper, rather than having gone through an academy or been given an officers rank alongside a title, and so are often more competent at their roles than professional soldiers. |
