Private Security
(Basic) Private Security – Night Watchman |
|||||||||
In the less-than-safe Imperium, most businesses employ some kind of security guard to watch the premises at night. Depending on personal preference, risk levels and local laws, many watchmen are armed. Additionally, most have experience in either the military or law enforcement, and so are used to tackling burglars or robbers. Sadly, many night watchmen spend their time sitting at a monitor and eating cakes, and so are severely out of shape. |

There are always occasions when a person is faced with a problem that he or she doesn’t want to alert normal law enforcement to, for example, a politician being blackmailed over his dodgy cash flow, or a shipment of narcotics going missing at the docks. In these situations, private eyes (the name coming partly from the abbreviation of ‘private investigator’ to P.I.) are ideal, if occasionally expensive. Usually former law enforcement officers themselves, yet with numerous contacts in the criminal underworld, P.I.s are fully skilled in uncovering criminals without the resources of a fully-fledged policeman. Taking pride in their discretion, P.I.s will generally hand over the name of the blackmailer, or the address at which the missing drugs can be found, to their employer and then consider the contract complete. What happens to the wrongdoers is nothing to do with him. However, the stress of being an enforcer of the law (or failing that, of justice), yet being repeatedly implicated in brutal revenge attacks can turn some private eyes into physical and emotional wrecks. |

The corporations and industrial houses on some Imperial worlds hold vast amounts of power – in some cases literally the power of life and death over their employees. On other worlds, they are forced to bend or break the law in order to maximise profits – cutting corners on safety, exploiting slaves or sweatshop workers, or breaking financial regulations. The men and women who enforce this are known as the ‘suits’, faceless yet immaculately dressed enforcers armed with the best weapons money can buy and utterly contemptuous of the law. They intimidate or assassinate those who oppose corporate expansion (practices known as ‘problem-solving exercises’) and sabotage rivals’ facilities (aka ‘outside contracting’). If the law does eventually catch up with a corporate suit, they can rely on their employers to do one of two things: defend them with the best lawyers on the planet, or cut them loose and deny all knowledge of their activities. Despite this uncertainty, corporate suits consider their job to be more rewarding than straightforward mercenary work, largely because of guaranteed job security, sick pay, a company pension and the stability that makes a family life possible. It can be unnerving for newcomers to corporate problem solving to visit the home of a colleague, who mere hours earlier was battering an environmentalist to death in a derelict warehouse, and find him chatting peacefully with his wife about repainting the hallway, as his children play happily in the garden. |

(Advanced) Private Security – Corporate Operative |

The most dedicated, ambitious and intelligent suits in a corporation’s employ may find themselves promoted to full operative status. Given a significant pay rise, stock options, medical insurance, widow’s pension and perhaps even a luxury penthouse apartment, an operative’s loyalty is assured, and they will carry out their work with professionalism. This may involve leading teams of suits on operations, or operating alone, perhaps infiltrating rival corporations, communities or political groups opposed to their employers, and removing the problem through guile or force. |
