Law Enforcement

(Basic) Law Enforcement – Beat Officer

The planetary police force’s remit covers local offences like theft, fraud, murder and narcotics. Any Imperial crimes (treason, heresy, Daemon worship and so on) are handed over to the Adeptus Arbites (who may in turn hand the most serious over to the Inquisition).

Many police forces are unarmed, although this only tends to be the case on civilised planets with efficient weapons control. Where the population has easy access to weapons (even if it’s just the criminal elements), police forces tend to be armed. Even then, budgetary restraints tend to leave the average beat officer outgunned. That’s what paramilitary tactical officers are for.

Some law enforcement forces tend to emphasise live arrests, and there are usually internal inquiries into suspect deaths, followed by criminal charges if the officer was found to have acted unlawfully. Most, however, aren’t too bothered, provided re-offending rates stay low.
